I guess this weekend we’ll see Jeremy Corbyn re-elected as leader of the Labour Party: so back to square one. The relatively unknown Owen Smith deserves some credit for taking the plunge but one does Wonder where other more illustrious figures were hiding when the call to arms came. The process has known some bisarre moments but the deadlock in the party seems certain to continue as th NEC has moved more in Corbyn’s directuon but not decisively so while most of the MPs seems likely to deny the party a shadow cabinet which could begin to look like a convincing alternative government. In the meantime Labour’s response to government fumbling on Brexit has been largely one of quietism. The debate about a second referendum is passing it by.
